The Mystery Team on The Road to Shutter Island

finally got around to watchin some movies over the week and boy were they great selection...courtesy of moi. me and the wife went to Red Box (*shakes fist* damn you for makin me like $1 movie!) and picked up 2 movies...and while workin a slow and draggin week, i decided to pick up 2 more, 1 for myself mainly...overall: 3.5 movies were good...yes, 3 point 5 :)

let's start off with the movies we rented...The Mystery Team and Big Fan

starrin Donald Glover (Community), DC Pierson, and Dominic Dierkes, 3 high school virgins who set up a team that solves mystery around the neighborhood such as "who stuck their finger into this pie?" or "what's that smell down by the tuna factory? something's fishy!". that all changed when a little girl approached them with a case to find the killer of her parents' death. Jason (Glover) felt it was an opportunity to get respected in the town and also subconciously impressed the little girl's older sister, Kelly (Aubrey Plaza). the team however ended up way over their head and got mixed up with some conspiracy cover-up, gun totin killers and toxic lumberyards. the team also came across some internal conflict amongst the members as far as the future of the detective work but later reunited to solved and defeated the bad guys.

i don't know who some of these tight ass, humorless fucks on Amazon that wrote the bad reviews were but this movie is FUN-NY. from beginnin to end, the humor never dried out. maybe my taste of comedy is less sophisticated then those with their tea and wine...but Donald Glover is one funny dude in a funny movie.

starrin Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, King Of Queens, Comedians Of Comedy) as a 32yr old die-hard New York Giants football fan who lives with his mom and work @ a toll booth in a parkin garage in Staten Island, NY. Paul (Patton) is always criticized by his family to get a life and a better job due to his brother bein a successful lawyer but Paul rather engaged in religious tailgattin and Giants football activities with his friend, Sal (Kevin Corrigan, Grounded For Life). Paul also is an advid listener of a midnight sports radio show and always call in as Staten Island Paul to trash talk to Philadelphia Eagles' fan, Philadelphia Phil (Michael Rapaport, Higher Learning, War At Home). so one day @ a gas station, Paul and Sal saw their favorite player, linebacker Quantrell Bishop and decided to follow him and his entourage throw NY through some drug trades all the way to a strip club in Manhattan. reluctantly at first but eventually built enough courage, Paul introduced himself to Quantrell and was doing fine for a bit. Paul made the mistake of telling Quantrell they followed him from NY to the club and enraged the Giants' linebacker. Quantrell and his entourage unleashed a severe beating on Paul which put him into a coma for a few days.

coming out of it, Paul's family insisted on suing Quantrell but being a fan of his, Paul decided not to. soon later Paul's older brother, a lawyer, decided to file for the lawsuit on behalf of Paul's and resulting in the media getting a hold of the identity of Quantrell's victim. that also lead in Philadelphia Phil finding out that it was Staten Island Paul and started to ridicule him on air. Paul scheduled a call-in to the sport radio but lost control and was disconnected from the air. ashamed and furious, Paul headed to Philadelphia in an Eagles get-up to Philadelphia Phil's favorite bar to find him due to Phil taunting Paul to leave NY and join the Eagles side and telling him the bar address. using several tactics to identify who Phil is, Paul followed him to the bathroom and began to shoot @ Phil in the stalls. later it was revealed to be red and blue paint as Paul ran frantically from the scene only to be chased down and arrested. the final scene shows Sal visiting Paul in jail behind a glass panel and putting up the new Giants schedule with Paul smiling at the line-up because of how dominating he felt the Giants would be.

i basically told the movie here because it wasn't a GREAT movie but it was decent. interesting to see Patton playing a more serious role, i guess...plus being a football fan, it wasn't a bad movie
i love post-apocalyptic movies. it allows me to see the possibilities of what the world could become and how these characters are able to sustain their life and survive. i especially like the non-zombies, non-nuclear-radioactive-humanoids shit. this is just about the struggle of a father, Viggo Mortensen (Lord Of The Rings), and his son, Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In), struggled to head to the coastline and dealing with the obstacles that stood in their way. with a cast of Charlize Theron and Robert Duvale, this movie showed the bond between father and son and watching the son grow up to be the man his father was. it also shows you the very possible outcome for humanity and how society coped with the aftermath of the catrostrophic event. A+ movie!
nowadays it doesn't seem like Leonardo DiCaprio can mae a bad movie. not only was i sold on this movie from the creepy preview, but with DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley starring in it too wasn't bad at all either. US Marshal Teddy (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck (Ruffalo) are assigned to this island where the criminally insane are held to investigate the case of a disappearing patient. as Teddy and Chuck unravels deeper into the island's past, they are entangled in a web of confusion and events that push the borders of reality to the point where they are questioning their own senses and judgements. i gotta admit that the twist was sorta predictable but this is an excellent, excellent movie nevertheless. the twist after the twist is also a treat. Leonardo DiCaprio is quite an actor; coming a long way from Titanic...i find him to be with the elite of actor casts there are now. a highly recommended movie!
